  • Balancing Safety & Autonomy: Ethical Management of Suicide Risk

This presentation explores the ethical tensions inherent in managing suicide risk. Participants will examine ethical decision-making frameworks for populations where autonomy, confidentiality, and safety considerations create competing obligations—including LGBTQ+ youth facing family rejection, families with differing cultural behaviors and values, and individuals for whom involuntary treatment may increase rather than mitigate risk.

The session emphasizes moving from fear-based decisions to ethically grounded clinical reasoning, addressing questions such as: When does duty to protect override therapeutic alliance? How do we balance legal and regulatory obligations with cultural humility and person-centered care? What constitutes adequate documentation of sound ethical judgment versus defensive practice?

Participants will learn about  practical approaches to informed consent processes that address risk collaboratively and documentation that reflects ethical reasoning in high-stakes clinical situations. Click here to earn more
